Street Furniture

York Region Transit Coordinated Street Furniture

Background

York Region is implementing a Coordinated Street Furniture program at its York Region Transit (YRT) facilities that will include the following amenities:

  • Transit Shelters
  • Benches
  • Bike Racks
  • Waste/Recycling Receptacles
  • Newspaper Box Organizers
  • Multi-Publication Units
  • Schedule Display Cases
  • Community Information Kiosks

The Coordinated Street Furniture program presents YRT and the area municipalities with an opportunity to promote an identifiable service across the Region, and achieve a unified and cohesive regional image while making ‘places’ within the public realm.

The Coordinated Street Furniture program also supports a number of Regional policies through promoting a transit-supportive public realm, well-designed and accessible public places and pedestrian-friendly streetscapes.

Design

After a comprehensive Request for Proposals (RFP) process, the contract for the design of YRT’s new street furniture has been awarded to Kramer Design Associates (KDA).

KDA’s responsibility is to design a coordinated street furniture program that builds upon YRT’s Urban Design Guidelines, endorsed by Regional Council on June 25, 2009, addressing:

  • Aesthetics
  • Functionality and Maintenance
  • Safety and Accessibility
  • Identity and Branding
  • Sustainability

Design Concepts Review

Workshops and a PIC were held to present the two potential co-ordinated street furniture lines (Clearscapesystemone and Clearscapesystemtwo). The objective was to determine which line is preferred and would move forward for final design development. Clearscapesystemone was selected and will move forward into final design development.

Proposed Final Design

The proposed final design of the coordinated street furniture line was presented at workshops and a PIC. These designs will also be presented to York Regional Council and subsequently be included as part of a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the supply, installation and maintenance of the coordinated street furniture with advertising. Once the RFP is awarded, the Region, KDA and the Contractor(s) will work together to refine the design for manufacturing and installation. It is anticipated that the new coordinated street furniture will begin to appear on street in late 2011.
